INTERNATIONAL JURY EARLY MELONS 2009
JURY INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
Viera Čákányová
She graduated in screenwriting at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts Bratislava in 2006. Currently, she is a third grade student at the Department of Documentary Production at FAMU in Prague. She is to complete two films, one short and the other one a little bit longer. They are not really documentaries, but, at least, they try to look like ones. When not creating, Viera is watching TV series or sleeping. She is looking forward to March 20, when the last part of Battlestar Galactica will be broadcasted, and she will finally learn the ending. She likes to make films, however, as she says, it is time to find a real job. In 2008, at the first Early Melons festival, she won the Grand Prix for her film Under Underground.Dana Dorian
As a director Dana mixes humour with a slightly dark approach and has built a reputation for working in a number of different narrative led styles. In 1994 he graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art with a Masters of Fine Art degree. Soon after he helped set up Glasgow based Axis Animation. While at Axis he has directed several award winning commercials and broadcast projects including the BAFTA winning animated series Colin and Cumberland for the BBC. Dana wrote and directed the hilarious animated short Fetch, which has been screened all around the world, winning several awards including a BAFTA and the prestigious audience award for best short international film at the Krakow Film Festival 2007.Markus Prasse
Born 1975 in rural Bavaria (Southern Germany). The lack of cinemas there and Studies in Sociology lead him toRegensburg, where he quickly fell into the hands of the local film club "Arbeitskreis Film e.V.", for which he organised the children's cinema, the Cinema at the University and various other film programmes. In 2001 he joined the organisational team of the Regensburger Kurzfilmwoche (Regensburg Short Film Week), one of the leading shortfilm festivals in Germany, where he has been Head of Festival since 2005.
Jevgenij Malkov
A young but promising artist, which is amply demonstrated by his cinematic output. His works inevitably involve a combination of the two differently-oriented cultures and mentalities of Eastern and Western Europe - a Russian, he was born in Odessa (Ukraine), grew up in Vilnius (Lithuania) and now lives and works in London (UK). For ten years he worked in advertising as a director and producer. At the same time he worked as an actor in theatre and films. He was one of the leading actors in the Russian drama theatre of Lithuania, and was rewarded with an “Amber mask” for the best male performance of the year. In recent years he has taken an active part in filmmaking – working at the BBC, writing scripts and teaching drama and stage speech in one of London’s theatre schools.
